Business Cards Make People Remember You

Seems obvious right? People have your card, can look and it, and remember your name and what you do.

While this is true, the usefulness of business cards in terms of recognition goes much deeper according to one study. The Department of Psychiatry at The Leopold Franzens University in Austria conducted a study where they evaluated the impact of business cards on physician recognition after [patients underwent general anaesthesia.

Basically, out of a group of 411 patients due to receive a general anaesthetic, 155 were given the business card of their surgeon during a preoperative visit, 137 were not given the card, while the other 149 patients acted as a control group.

6 weeks after their surgery they were called back to conduct an interview. During the interview they were asked to remember their anaesthesiologist's name, the surgeon’s name, and also comment on their overall satisfaction with the anaesthetic care.

The results were exceedingly clear cut - 51% of those who received a business card during the preoperative visit were able to recall the names, versus only 11% of the group who did not receive the card. This is an increase in recognition and memory recall of just under 400%!

The implications are clear for business and personal use - handing out your card will increase the chances of someone remembering you beyond them simply being able to use your card as reference. In turn they are more likely to do business with you in the future.
